'The Indian Doctor is a British television drama, set in the 1960s. Produced by Rondo Media and Avatar Productions, it was first broadcast on BBC One in 2010. The most recent series began on 4 November 2013 on BBC One daytime and concluded on 8 November. It is a period comedy drama starring Sanjeev Bhaskar as an Indian doctor who finds work in a South Wales mining village.'
Prem Sharma, a highly educated Indian Doctor, and Kamini, his beautiful upper class wife, are attracted by the promise of opportunities in the new National Health Service and a glamorous lifestyle in London. They leave India in 1963 only to find themselves sent to a small practice in a Welsh coal mining village instead of the bright lights of the big city.
Set in 1963, storylines examine the culture shock experienced by both locals and new arrivals when the British government wooed Indian doctors to practice in the UK. It's a quirky mix of hit series' DOC MARTIN, HEARTBEAT, BORN AND BRED and CALL THE MIDWIFE.
The Sharmas struggle to cope with the culture shock of being educated foreigners in a small working class village, but the doctor’s gentle bedside manner and understanding of human nature helps win over the local people. To the dismay of his wife, Dr Sharma refuses her appeals to leave until he has exposed a cover-up at the coal mine detrimental to the miners’ health. Meanwhile, growing friendships between the doctor and a local widow, and Kamini’s with a troubled young schoolboy, hint that the Sharmas each have a secret of their own.
A charming cast includes Sanjeev Bhaskar, who has just returned for a new series of THE KUMARS AT No. 42, Ayesha Dharker (STAR WARS EPISODE II) and Mark Williams (HARRY POTTER, THE FAST SHOW).
Based on real events, this uplifting and charming new BBC comedy/drama has become a fast hit with viewers thanks to a host of lively characters, exceptional acting and outstanding production values and has just filmed a third season!
